The Skinny 7.08.09 through 7.14.09

Howdy friends of the Pancake:

Hmmm…should I mention the deluge of rain we’ve been experiencing thus far this summer?…16 out 0f 30 days in June…nah…better to focus on something positive:

Did you know that yesterday at 12:34 and 56 seconds, the official time was 123456789?

Now that’s newsworthy!

This week’s food specials at the Skinny Pancake(s):

Stuffed Crepe Leaves (Burlington): a spin on the traditional Greek dish “Golabki”. Three Tightly Wrapped “Crepe Leaves” with Lean Ground Lamb, Rice, Scallions, Crushed Tomatoes, and Mint, Tied Together with a Ramekin of Plain Yogurt Seasoned with Lemon Juice and Salt…$9.25.

The Simple Summer Crepe (Montpelier): Heirloom Tomatoes, fresh basil leaves from Main Street Market Garden, and Maple Brook Farm fresh mozzarella.  Simple, local, yum.  $8.25

Seen here is an image of traditional “Golabki.” Given that this crepe creation is the brainchild of Kitchen Manager of Polish decent, Trent Kominoski…and Trent is the womb-child of his mother…we briefly considered calling this dish “Trent Kominoski’s Mother II.” But last week’s special “Trent Kominoski’s Mother Crepe” won the “awkward name of the year award” by staff and patrons alike, so we opted for a punnier description…

Originating from Buffalo New York, Megan just finished up an international music tour for the debut of her independently produced album “Megan Callahan-Since the Fire.” Her original roots are in folk and folk rock, but in recent years jazz and blues have found their way into the mix and she is excited to explore more electro-acoustic possibilities and multi-medium collaboration.

Megan is currently in Vermont working with the Lost Nation Theater in Montpelier and joins the Skinny Pancake in Burlington Thursday July 9th 9-11p.m. for a solo acoustic performance.

Friday, 07.10.09
Ten Dollar Pony (
Original Folk, Pop, Blues)
***$5 suggested donation
www.myspace.com/tendollarpony

Lake Tahoe area folk-rock duo Ten Dollar Pony will be appearing this Friday, July 10th.  Based in a “vocal-centric” aesthetic, their lively blend of original and cover tunes encompasses many styles; folk, pop, blues, and country rock to name a few. Whether delivering intimate and heart wrenching ballads with warm harmonies, or raucous blues, their music ranges from sweet to wryly observant, to perversely funny, all served up with intelligence and wit. They have spent a lot of time on stage together over the last 8 years, and it shows.

Give a listen www.myspace.com/tendollarpony and catch them in their exclusive Burlington Vermont performance at the Skinny Pancake.

The Smittens

The Skinny Pancake is honored to welcome these Kings of Twee-Pop back to the SP. Unlike any other act out there, the Smittens are very well-loved here in Burlington. We’ve got our fingers crossed that this gig will take place outside on our patio as the Smittens are sure to bring a full house!

About the band: The Smittens are a five-piece indiepop band from Burlington, Vermont and like to think of themselves as a DIY twee pop explosion. Dana Kaplan, Colin Clary, David Zacharis, Holly Chagnon, and Max Andrucki, with help from the talented Emily Hilliard, switch up instruments, song-writing, and singing to create brilliantly lyrical and hyper-catchy pop songs of all colors, shapes and sizes. Formed on a whim at a party in 2002 by a group of popkids who wanted to make for their friends the kind of music they love, the Smittens have emerged as one of the country’s best-loved underground indiepop quintets, with headlining slots in the past year at the New England, New York, Toledo, and Athens Popfests. The bands third album The Coolest Thing About Love, mixed by Eric Masunaga, is out now, on Athens, Georgia’s indie institution Happy Happy Birthday To Me. The critically acclaimed ‘Gentlefication Now!’ and ‘A Little Revolution’ are both now available through Happy Happy Birthday to Me so click here to order or you can download the album from the links below:
