The Skinny 09.14.09 through 09.20.09
Hey folks,
another week, another list of great activities to do around VT. Please note, the following four events are NOT listed in chronological order…
First, a plug for a fundraiser here at the Skinny Pancake in support of the Green Mountain Club:
The Skinny Pancake will be donating 10% of ALL proceeds from BOTH our Burlington & Montpelier locations to the Green Mountain Club this Tuesday, September 22nd. If you enjoy our food, atmosphere or company, please consider visiting one of our locations on Tuesday to help raise these funds to support the great work GMC does to maintain our state’s trail systems & shelters. Want to know more about the GMC? Just go for a hike in Vermont (or visit them at www.greenmountainclub.org). And then come eat at the Skinny Pancake this coming Tuesday, September 22nd!!!
The Montpelier Downtown Music Festival:
This Saturday September 19, 2009 downtown Montpelier comes alive when The Montpelier Downtown Music Festival begins at 3:00pm. The event will commence with family-friendly fare sponsored by The City of Montpelier, featuring clowns, street performance, puppetry and more, as well as performance art from central Vermont teens and a non-amplified busker style set from Montpelier based purveyors of invasive-acoustic music, Didymo. At 5:00pm, Julio’s Cantina and The Three Penny Taproom will open their beverage gardens, with Julio’s serving up their famous margaritas and other creative cocktail fare.
Le Tour De Farm:
Sunday, September 20th 2009
This event looks incredible…and I, for one, am planning to do it!!!
From the organizers: “Last year’s Tour de Farms proved so popular that organizers have scheduled another for Sunday, September 20, 2009. The Coalition, Rural Vermont, and ACoRN will again offer three routes (10, 25, and 30 miles) that depart from and return to Shoreham. Bicyclists will enjoy a variety of food samples from farms located along the routes. In 2008, samples included bread, cheese, chili, yogurt, cider, apples, and quiche. There will be some additions this year, including food and a celebration at the finish as riders arrive back in Shoreham.

MUSIC THIS WEEK AT THE SKINNY PANCAKE:
Thursday, 09.17.09
Poor Howard Stith (folk)
***$5 suggested donation
Poor Howard Stith’s “12-string guitar has the solid, propulsive groove of a steady-moving freight train; and he has the uncanny way of singing classic blues tunes as if their hard-luck stories were happening today. In his care, old songs never seem old, but timeless, personal, pulsing with knowable human emotions. His own songs nestle beside them as if they grew up together.”
Scott Alarik, Principal folk music writer of the “Boston Globe” described Poor Howard “…His Droll patter, outrageous jokes, tall tales, and bald-faced lies felt as if they grew from the same rich folk soil that the songs did. Somehow, he delivers it all – ancient blues, modern ballad, and wild-eyed pun – in a way that makes you think you’re just sitting around his kitchen table, passing a jug and whiling away an easy Saturday night.”
Endorsements from the critics of the industry…that’s a good sign in my book…

Folk By Association (female folk duo)
***$5 suggested donation
www.myspace.com/folkbyassociation
Folk By Association is a professional crew…they’ve toured consistently for a decade or more now. We’re very grateful that they should continue to return to the Skinny Pancake when they come through VT. Quality folk music here…check it out for yourselves.
About the band: Folk By Association is the duo of Karen Krajacic and Jill Cowen, two singer/songwriter/ multi-instrumentalists who have truly become a grassroots phenomenon. They share eight years, two CDs, twenty-three states, hundreds of performances, and an infinite resolve to carve for themselves a career path that lies just outside of the commercial mainstream- all the while operating completely independently of any record label or outside management. Traveling almost constantly, they’ve played everything from intimate house concerts to large festivals, showcasing their top-notch vocal harmonies and organic blend of guitar and mandolin. Their sound is an eclectic blend of influences (folk, rock, bluegrass, jazz, world) combined with poetically penned lyrics, resulting in a uniquely inspiring and energetic expansion of contemporary acoustic music. Recently the duo has begun producing and booking regional events in an effort to bring other high-quality artists to their audience’s attention. They collaborate with Moon Dancer Winery in Wrightsville, PA to hold an annual Folk Festival, have organized a singer/songwriter series with Orpha’s Coffeeshop in Skillman, NJ, another with Fergie’s Pub in Philadelphia, PA, and hosted a recurring “Lilith Night” at the Moose in Doylestown, PA.
